How to
Clean & Seal Granite
keep your granite in tip-top
condition, five simple maintenance procedures are
necessary. For best results, they should be followed very
closely.
Clean the countertop daily with a soft white cloth and
a neutral cleaner or stone soap. These products are
available at our office. Similar products can be found in
stores that carry household cleaning products.
It
may be necessary to buff the countertop with a clean white
terry cloth towel if streaking occurs.
Occasionally apply a good stone polish to the surface of
the countertop to help prevent staining.
All
granite countertops should be sealed. We seal the
countertop as the last thing we do before we leave the
installation. Our impregnator will resist oil and other
staining materials, but not for prolonged amounts of time.
We recommend reapplication of impregnator should be done
every seven years. This product is available at our office
or we can reapply.
If
the countertop becomes stained, immediately blot the spill
with a clean paper towel. If the stain soaks into the
granite then a poultice may need to be applied.
How to Seal
Granite Countertops
If you need to seal
your granite countertops, this step by step guide makes it
a snap!
Steps
- Uniformly apply the sealer to
your countertop using a clean white rag. You can use a
brush instead of a rag.
Use a Paint Pad
- Let the sealer absorb into the
stone for approximately 3 to 4 minutes.
- When the sealer is almost dry,
apply a little more sealer on your granite and then
rub it in with a dry, clean rag.
- Repeat on the next section of
stone until your entire countertop is sealed.
- Wait at least two hours and then
apply a second application. The wait time depends on
your specific brand of sealer.
Tips
- It's best to work in a small
area, 4 to 5 square feet.
- If your granite needs to be
sealed, at least 2 coats of sealer is recommended.
- Wait at least 2 hours before
reapplying sealer.
- To find out if your stone is
sufficiently sealed, spill water on your countertop,
wait for about 1/2 hour, then wipe it up. If your
stone does not darken, your countertop is sufficiently
sealed.
Warnings
- Not all granite needs to be sealed.
Things You'll Need
- A clean white rag.
- A good quality impregnator
sealer.
